GSBA Finance Workshop
Tuesday, October 3, 2023
8:00am-3:30pm
In-Person only
Large increases in state health benefits premiums, the
looming impact of a funding cliff from terminating ESSER funds, and the
political predicament resulting from the public’s perception of school district
budget surpluses - all offer new and different funding decisions for School Governance
Teams. Join us as we provide financial updates from the Georgia Department of
Education, an explanation of how school funding works from a former school
board member and superintendent, and a panel discussion on budgets, tax
hearings, and competing with surrounding counties for talent. Although normally
held as a part of the GSBA/GSSA Annual Conference, a stand-alone, more centrally
located workshop should allow more access to one of our highest-rated
workshops. Join former superintendent Dr. Steve Smith, former board member Marc
Wisniewski, and Georgia DOE Director of Financial Review Amy Rowell for an
engaging, relevant, and useful exploration of one of the most important roles
of school district governance teams.
This training will take place in person only in Macon, Georgia. A continental breakfast will be served at 8:00am and the program begins at 8:30am. Lunch will also be provided. The training concludes at 3:30pm.
Board members who attend will receive 6 hours of training credit. It is also open to
superintendents and district staff to attend.
