Trust, Confidentiality & Student Privacy During Challenging Times

with Kristen Garner, ASBA Staff Attorney

  • Why are these topics important?
  • What happens if school employees violate trust, confidentiality or student privacy?

  • How does COVID-19 make this more complicated?

Parents put a lot of trust in public schools. Part of this trust is based on an expectation of confidentiality.  During this training session, ASBA staff attorney will share the importance of gaining and maintaining trust, some of the elements that lend themselves to this, and how lends support to adhering to what’s required in law by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Now that the COVID-19 pandemic is here and the new school year is beginning, it’s important that school leaders and staff revisit the requirements of FERPA.  Does the community have a right to know which students and staff are COVID positive? How can a district inform the public that there might be issues without revealing individual students identity, even if indirectly?  What happens if a staff member breaks confidence and shares this information with others?

The cost for this 2-hour virtual training session is $80.  It will be held via Zoom from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2020.
